419 Correspondence With Nigerian
Email Advance Fee Con Artists
The story unfolds on how these fraudsters operate as one viewer
sends along his correspondence with some Nigerian Advance Fee Scammers.
Hello,
My name is Emil and am writing from Romania, East Europe. I was
in touch with some of the scam letter authors – just by e-mail & phone.
There were two distinct stories (or it might be the same author...)
and I did not consider paying much time on them until the second
group of messages arrived in my mail box. I then searched the web
and identified very clearly the type of brains which authored the
messages.
There I discovered the international proportions of the scam letter
business. Your site is the best database I've seen.
STORY 1
Beginning: Early January, 2001 Mid-end February, 2001
Subject: Chief Obiofor Nwafor, son of another chief Bagudu Nwafor,
Zimbabwe, victim of oppression by ZANU PF, etc – is
in Spain and wants to get the special cargo arriving from South
Africa with the remnants of his father assets. Unfortunately the
commission and money asked by the "security company" is
more than available, so that an external money infusion is needed
for clearance (of course, asked from the potential victim).
Personal attitude: Due to lack of information about what’s
going on in this world around, lost quite a lot of time and put
effort until realising who is in fact the communication partner.
I never fully believed in the truthfulness
of this story, which attitude helped me to stop. Who could be
that chief Bagudu? Spent some time to learn the situation as
described on sites about Africa and Zimbabwe. Wrote to several
human rights agencies, including Amnesty Int. in UK and local
offices in Africa.
No ID of the mentioned names found.
Steps taken: asking as many questions as possible, deeper and
deeper into detail. This took some time – totally, there
were over 25 mails received from "Obi" and same sent
, maybe less. Plus two phone calls done by me out of curiosity.
Above all things, I thought that a push-pull communication would
drive him to the end of patience and cause him forget many of
things told in the beginning. For your knowledge (and fun at
times) here is what I did.
First wanted to present myself as
well as possible to catch his trust and try open him if I open
myself (though controlled). I presented myself as an active Evangelical
Christian – which is true, told shortly something about
everything, sent even a scanned picture of myself. Asked him
to do the same – never responded to my first set of questions;
just something parallel. After presenting me as believing Christian,
he began to pose as a fellow Christian brother. So, naturally,
among other things asked him to share his testimony – how
he became a Christian. Wrong answer from him – touched
no essentials of faith, usually known.
After a number of mails he began to
push me to send money. I could delay another week, motivating
it is not possible to use Western Union to transfer funds from
Romania, except to 1st grade relatives (this is real). So, informed
him I’ll try ask a friend from West Europe to do it. But
not the sum requested ("to survive until we meet in Madrid") – just
a "test" small sum in order to check it arrives well.
The idea was to track him, if he is really in Spain or anywhere.
So, a first sum of 10-12$ was sent.
After that, checked the web site of Western Union (WU) several
times a day to see if the sum was picked-up. Informed my friend
who has sent the money to enquire at the European WU headquarters
(in Brussels?) and track the place where the money were picked-up.
First surprise, while all communication
was claimed to be located in Madrid, the money were picked up
in Malaga, which is the very south of Spain. Frankly, I expected
something worse (Caraibe, Honolulu...). And it took 1 week to
pick it up. Asking why, Obi claimed that his acquainted Patrick
Clemens traveled in the country and therefore the delay. Obi
asked about USD1000 until I would fly to Madrid to bring the
rest of the money to clear the cargo from South Africa – just
to have to live, buy a cell phone for communicating with me.
Further, I asked another friend from Germany to send him another
portion of small money – this time via bank route in his
account. Obi refused this system. So asked the first friend,
which anyway advised me to stop the game, send another money
portion, enough for a cheap cell phone. In one of the mails asked
Obi to tell which are the languages he speaks – answer: "ungala" and
English. Can tell, never found a track of "ungala" on
all specialized linguistical sites…. So, my friend sent
the money – this time they were picked up faster. Obi transmitted
a cell phone number where to be reached. I was very excited to
hear his voice – knowing the English spoken generally by
the Africans, with its round sounds. So I could call one night
for several minutes.
A very important element and a new
obstacle appeared – I was pushing the visit and it was
very close (maybe less than 10 days before the flight), when
Obi "announced" there is needed more money for the
clearance of the cargo. This after he was told I had the flight
ticket reservation for that date and will meet him at that hour
in that place. Very specific. It was about several thousand dollars
difference which I "could not" bring.
I wanted to fly to Madrid and there
meet a friend from Germany coming with his car for backing me
up – then trying to contact the local police or anybody
dealing with those guys. Asked Obi to try contact his "lawyer" in
South Africa and borrow from him the rest of the needed money.
I think, discouraged him when informed I’ll carry no cash
with me on the flight and the arrangements would be made after
we meet. Slowly, felt how he draws back and finally I had to
cancel the flight before to meet him. I understand this, especially
after the final test at the phone:
Passed his phone number to my friend
and asked him to call. Very important: All of the sudden, in
the middle of the conversation to ask which languages he speaks.
The "African" voice type was confirmed – Obi
did not mentioned "ungala" as the first dialect spoken – in
fact, not at all- something else. Immediately he realised the
mistake and just succeeded to keep his anger low voiced. Well
done – he was disqualified for good. Somehow I regret not
finalizing the operation - though there were too many risky and
negative elements involved and I really had no longer time to
lose with it.
So, the whole operation has cost me
some USD250 in all. I could not identify the Obi person, whoever
he was (Patrick Clemens?). Took care to have no strong words
with Obi, just our relationship stopped due to objective "circumstances".
I have sent him one or two messages, asking about his present
status – keep him warm. He avoids to speak about lately
developments – also the urgency seems gone… Even
a Passover greeting card came from him - how sweet….
STORY 2
I thought to forget about it, until another 2 scams were in my
box, at a distance of few days – this time from the well
known Nigerian source (Attached). I had enough of the first type,
so could feedback more clearly, and tougher by straightforward
questions. Was even more sarcastic - I asked for minimal USD300
to cover the costs of "start-up" operations! This time
no answer yet. Do not expect any follow-up…..
So, this kind of disease reaches Romania, too. My questions to
you: How is it possible to track those mail addresses of these
scam authors? Guess quite difficult and only when they are online?
Is it any protocol active between the yahoo provider and investigation
services? Did you hear until now of those names mentioned? Would
be very glad to receive any feedback from you, or if there is any
newsletter issued by your services….

The reason of this message is to ask you, if possible,
help me check the accuracy of information I have about an political
opponent in Zimbabwe. I was contacted by his son, asking for
help (not only financial) and BEFORE I can take any action I'd
like verify the truthfulness of the whole matter.
Growing under the communist regime in Romania and
in an Evangelical Christian home & church, I witnessed
much injustice and persecution against our churches and even
members of own family.
BUT I still have that feeling and sensitivity
towards human rights and desire to help those victims, as we
once were.
1) Do you know any member of the movement for
political change in Zimbabwe (is it MDC?) by name BAGUDU (or
BADUGU) NWAFOR (entitled CHIEF...), who was arrested in the second
half of the last year, and most of his possesions confiscated
by the ZANU PF activists?
2) Was this man NWAFOR associated in business with
a white man, who was arrested too?
3) Can you list the members of the NWAFOR family
(sons) ? Are they all in the country or fled?
4)Which suggestions do you have - should I proceed
to help asap, or you have no idea about this name, or?

Sorry we have no registrations of any person by
that name. The MDC had a total of more than 1,1 million
votes during the June elections and there are reports stating
that there were more than 40.000 people ill-treated during the "election-campaign",
so that does not say that his information is not correct.
You might want to contact one of the NGOs in Zimbabwe
or MDC itself. Look for the MDC at fi the yahoo or the Guardian
web page, where they have links to MDC and NGOs on their Zimbabwe
news page.

release it to me and that is the problem also me right now. I
prefer that you fly, that will be quicker and also my lawyer
in South Africa told me that he will fly to Madrid during this

Let me begin first with how actually I became
a Christian. First I was bone as a catholic because my parents
are Christian including the whole of our family and can even
say our region are mostly Christian. ALMIGHTY GOD has done a

Did you picked up the first money sent? Please
confirm. I have instructed a second contact I have in Germany
to send you further money on a second channel. He tried yesterday
to send using the same name of Patrick Clemens - he was not successful
because from there they operate just transfers from an account
to another, no cash pay . Could you send me what account has
Mr. Clemens and at which Bank/branch? It would be good to know
to build up a second channel for transfer. BUT I need also to
know for sure the first test sum is in your hands. Did Patrick
collect the money? It's already a week since the money were sent.
IT IS IMPORTANT to do so as suggested. Regarding the contact
in your town, I've got not yet the relevant address because my
friend could not contact the man in Denia-they had some problems
with their local network and are very busy with their farm. Still
wait today or tomorrow and will send you any news. Until then
please contact Patrick and take the first money out, so that
I can instruct to be sent more. PLEASE DO SO. I'll keep in touch.
Q1: If you do not have an ID with you, HOW will
you be able to have access to any bank account opened in my name?!
Q2: Did your lawyer confirm he can supplement the extra 3k needed?
Q3: Do you have any phone number where to be reached? Did you try to
call yesterday at about 18:10 your time? I was in the church and noticed
my mobile lit up because of an incoming call.

has just brought the money and also regarding the account of
Mr. Clemens he said to transfer money from outside Spain will
always get to bank after 10 days of transfer and please he can
try to send me any money through western union and again please
tell me when you are coming and as soon I am able to get any
money I will take a mobile telephone so that you can reach me
.
The problem is that I can't go and take money
from the consignment because the courier company are not aware
of the contents of the cargo, that is the reason of my contacts
and i am also scared that they might not request money for demurrage
from me because the cargo has be with them for some time and
I have not since this week because they don't know the reason
why i haven't come for the cargo. Emil, I also spoke with
my lawyer, He said that he try as he could to raise 3k
for me if he can not promise to mail me by Monday.

How are you? because I was wondering that I haven't
heard from but nevertheless Mr. Patrick has been a nice man to
me but I knew him when I came to Madrid ,just a couple of days
when I came into the country.
Emil, I think is close to me because the money
you sent before was collected but actually I didn't know exactly
because I told that he wasn't around when the money was sent,
he brought the money when he came back to Madrid and also regarding
where I am staying.
I am still in Madrid but I might leave tonight
to another city to stay with Mr. Patrick friend because I cant
afford to pay my bills. Also response to my lawyer he sent me
an email just now and in his letter he said that he has able
to raise US$10,900 total but still remaining about US$6100 but
I hope that I don't have to pay more demurrage since the security
told me last time that I have to pick the cargo.
But my lawyer still promise that he do his best
more but in the letter I think he not too sure. Emil can
send me the money through my name OBIOFOR NWAFOR but I didn't
want to use it because I don't know the implication regarding

agreeing on a special percent I know what I will do something

In regard to how the consignment will be cleared
that is the reason my lawyer wants to come to get the cargo cleared

I have told Mr. Patrick to get the money but he
promise to bring the money by Saturday because he is working
late and also regarding the money to clear the cargo the lawyer
been able to do more and I have contacted the security company
they told me that I have to pay additional US$5,675 for the demurrage
and also for the security vault as they said.
Emil really I don't know what to do now because
the whole money that I am looking for will be about US$12,000+
to get it cleared and also if you able to get this fund as borrow
for us to get the cargo cleared please tell me so that I will
tell the lawyer to confirm his flight ticket for Sunday evening
to be in Madrid on Monday morning so that we could do everything
ASAP.

I don't understand what I said but the previous
mail I sent was that my lawyer was able to raise the US$10,800
and remaining the about US6,200 and now the security company
told me that I have to pay US$5,675 which make the total of the
previous 6k and now the 5k,that is the issue and you must understand
that I appreciate your efforts and assistance you have been rendering.
Emil is because there is no other hope for me right now to get
the money that is even the reason I told you in my mail because
I wouldn't want you to travel from Romania to Spain without achieving
our plans. The lawyer said that the only money left with him
apart from the 10k is the ticket money to Madrid.
